Is Jihad Yoga?

Western academics and the media (do these idiots read?) would have you believe that Jihad is just another form of yoga – the inner struggle to become pure and good.

This is a lie.

Jihad = Holy War

Jihad fi Sabilillah

“Oh Prophet!  Urge the believers to fight.  If there are twenty steadfast persons amongst you, they will overcome two hundreds, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are people who do not understand.” – The Qur’an (8:65)

Jihad (Holy War) is a permanent war that excludes the possibility of peace but allows temporary truces to improve the political situation.

The Islamic concept of jihad is complex.  The word means “to struggle” or “to strive.”  It is a struggle against all that is perceived as evil.  It is a cosmic struggle that spans all dimensions of human thought and action.

Muslims often refer to is as jihad fi Sabilillah (struggle in the path of God).

There are two main forms of jihad:

The Major Jihad (Jihad al-Akbar) is the internal struggle to control one’s own passions and desires.

The Minor Jihad (Jihad al-Asghar) is the external struggle for Islam, through pen, tongue, or sword, as applicable.

Religious Muslims

Warfare in Islam has two distinct types:

The defensive jihad is the defense of the dar-al-Islam.  The defense of the House of Islam.

The offensive jihad is the military conquest of dar-al-Harb.  The House of War comprises all lands not under the submission of Islam.

The purpose of jihad is not to spread the Islamic faith directly, but to extend sovereign Muslim power to territories ruled by non-Muslims.  The Islamic faith would eventually follow these conquests.

This territorial expansion has always been a central aspect of Muslim life.

Juhadists routinely attack non-Muslims, loot their belongings and murder those opposing them.  Jihadists have enslaved hundreds of thousands of women and children, and have forced them to convert to Islam.  Women are usually raped and forced into a life of sexual servitude.

Muhammad continued to call for Jihad al-Asghar, the external, physical type of jihad (i.e. HOLY WAR) until his death, ending only with the unbelievers being subdued.

Muslim Woman
The Rewards for Jihad = 72 Virgins

The rewards for Holy War include:

  • Wealth – Muhammad kept a fifth of the spoils of war, and divided the rest among his military.
  • Allah’s Love – Allah has always preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit at home.
  • Sins Forgiven – Allah promised to forgive a person’s sins when they fought for his cause.
  • Avoiding Allah’s Anger – Allah does not love those who refused to fight.
  • Paradise – Muhammad urged his followers to go to war to earn their place in paradise.
  • Virgins – Muhammad said that the gardens of paradise were full of virgins for men to enjoy in the afterlife.
Sufism – Muslim Mystics

Appearing six centuries after Muhammad’s death, the Sufis are Islamic Mystics.  Sufism is mainly focused on the direct perception of Truth or God through mystic practices based on divine love.

There are a wide range of these mystic brotherhoods, and tariqas (Sufi orders) can be Shi’s or Sunni, both or neither.

Sufi Islam has been viewed by orthodox Sunni Muslims with suspicion because of its strong mystical components.  Shi’a Muslims are also usually hostile towards Sufism because they believe it is heretical.

In any case, the Sufis comprise a very small minority of Islam.

The first sect in Islam to attempt to transfer the meaning of jihad from spreading Islam with the sword to a spiritual struggle to fight evil within oneself were the Sufites.

Most Muslims do not consider Sufis to be true Muslims.
